Anne Frank was born in Frankfurt, Germany in 1929. Hitler's rise to power in 1933 forced her family to flee to the Netherlands, to avoid the persecution unleashed by the Nazi regime against the Jewish communities.
In 1942, thirteen-year-old Anna and her family hide behind a house in Amsterdam. For the next two years, she would record in her diary the painful experience of incarceration. With disarming honesty and humor, her records capture a girl's struggle to preserve, even in the midst of the worst danger, freedom of thought, imagination and the joy of childhood innocence.
Seventy years after it was first published, this diary remains the most moving story of the Second World War and a stirring hymn to the ideal of freedom.
